Telescope

Hubby got a new hobby - looking at planets and stars through his new telescope.

At my in-laws' place as he try to set the telescope up and how to use it as it has an auto-tracking thingy.

Moon
This was taken on the 18 August'13.

This was taken on the 20 September'13 - around Mid-Autumn Festival.
The Moon was really big, round and super bright.

We saw Saturn too ! But it was kind of small though you can still make out the rings.

Hubby said he will most probably get a higher magnification so that we can see Saturn clearer.

The Mani Man

"There was once an old man in far eastern Kham known as the Mani Man because day and night he could always be found devotedly spinning his small homemade prayer wheel. The wheel was filled with the mantra of Great Compassion, Om Mani Padme Hung.
The Mani Man lived with his son and their one fine horse. The son was the joy of the man’s life; the boy’s pride and joy was the horse.

The man’s wife, after a long life of virtue and service, had long since departed for more fortunate rebirths.
Father and son lived, free from excessive wants or needs, in one of several rough stone houses near a river on the edge of the flat plains.

One day their steed disappeared. The neighbors bewailed the loss of the old man’s sole material asset, but the stoic old man just kept turning his prayer wheel, reciting “Om Mani Padme Hung,” Tibet’s national mantra.
To whoever inquired or expressed condolences, he simply said, “Give thanks for everything. Who can say what is good or bad? We’ll see.”

After several days the splendid creature returned, followed by a pair of wild mustangs. These the old man and his son swiftly trained.
Then everyone sang songs of celebration and congratulated the old man on his unexpected good fortune.
The man simply smiled over his prayer wheel and said, “I am grateful…but who knows? We shall see.”

Then, while racing one of the mustangs, the boy fell and shattered his leg.
Some neighbors carried him home, cursing the wild horse and bemoaning the boy’s fate.
But the old man, sitting at his beloved son’s bedside just kept turning his prayer wheel around and around while softly muttering gentle Lord Chenrezig’s mantra of Great Compassion.
He neither complained nor answered their protestations to fate, but simply nodded his head affably, reiterating what he had said before. “The Buddha is beneficent; I am grateful for my son’s life. We shall see.”

The next week military officers appeared, seeking young conscripts for an ongoing border war.
All the local boys were immediately taken away, except for the bedridden son of the Mani Man.
Then the neighbors congratulated the old man on his great good fortune, attributing such luck to the good karma accumulated by the old man’s incessantly spinning prayer wheel and the constant mantras on his cracked lips.
He smiled and said nothing."

The above story came just in time for me. I was worried about something but as what the old man had said, “Give thanks for everything. Who can say what is good or bad? We’ll see.”

Astronomy @ Bishan Park

30 April 2013

We follow the tweets of Gary who is a very enthusiastic astronomer in Singapore.

He tweeted that he will will bringing a very big telescope to view Saturn.

We drove to Bishan Park opposite the McDonalds and located him.

There were other enthusiasts like him there with their telescopes. I saw thru one telescopes - clusters of stars.

Anyway, we looked thru Gary's telescope (it was indeed a big telescope) and this time I had a good look at Saturn unlike the last time where it was really small as it was a small telescope.

Yes, this is what I saw thru the telescope(picture courtesy of Gary). Amazing isn't it? That you're actually seeing a planet so so far away.

And now...... drum roll please............... the highlight of the night....................

We were sitting around when suddenly there was an uproar. I turned my head and saw a bluish-green bright light streaking across the sky. What's that, fireworks? can't be, somebody lit a flare?

I asked one of the guys and he said it's a meteorite! What! you mean I saw a meteorite?!!!

We were definitely very, very lucky to see it.

Of cos, we didn't get a pic of it. Who would have expected it but it looked like the pic below.

Wow!!!!!!!! oops and I forgot to make a wish.

Follow Gary on his blog or tweeter if you're interested to see side-walk astronomy.

Astronomy @ Toa Payoh Library

18 March 2013

A couple of times, when we walked past the Toa Payoh library, there will be this guy with his telescope.

I remembered the first time I approached him and asked him what he's looking at and he very generously offered me to view through his telescope.

What is it ? It was Saturn !

I couldn't see it at first - I thought I will be seeing a gigantic pic of the planet but instead it was a very small pic of Saturn. Why is the planet moving up and down ? Becos Earth is not still but spinning.

It was such a thrill. An actual planet so far, far away and Saturn with the rings round it.

He explained more in details about the planet.

So I was rather happy that he's conducting astronomy talks at Toa Payoh library on a regular basis (check out his website or Toa Payoh library for more details).

That's Gary conducting the astronomy talk.

A great turn out. There were about 3 queues. Some of the other astronomers turned up with their own telescope.
Thank goodness, otherwise the queue will be even longer.

Queueing patiently.
And Eugene having a close up view of the moon.

This guy brought his gigantic telescope to look at Jupiter.

Very nice guy, this Gary.

Picture of the Moon taken by my iPhone thru the lens of the telescope !

If you do not want the crowd, do check out Gary's blog below. He will usually state the time and venue where he will bring along his telescope to view the stars and planets and will let you view it too.

Overlapped Parallel Dimension?

Ok, I've told you before of my experiences with "Parallel Dimensions".

And now, I've recently got another experience which was a first for me.

My father accidentally dropped his denture and wanted me to find a dentist to glue it back for him. Since it was evening, I told him that I'll go and inquire with the 2 dental clinics near my place the next morning.. And the whole night, I was thinking where are the other dental clinics (besides the 2 that I know of) which I can inquire.

Early the next morning, my dad called me on my mobile even though I was at home. He thought that I should be out of the house as it's usually the time that I bring Eugene to school but Eugene's holiday programme starts later.

Anyway, my dad told me that he would prefer to go back to the National Dental Centre as they have his records there and he likes the doctor.

I asked my dad to check his NDC appointment card and to give me the telephone number stated there.

After hanging up the mobile. I immediately went to get my house's cordless phone but before I could dial the numbers, the phone rang.

Hmm.... who could it be? so early!

Hello?

Good morning, I'm calling from the National Dental Centre and I'm returning your call.

????????? I was dumbfounded. I wanted to ask her questions but I thought since she's on the line, I get my dad's appointment fixed first.

After the appointment's being fixed. I asked the lady.

Er... you called me, you're returning my call?

Yes, we got your missed call.

Oh, ok thanks - I didn't want to ask more or she'll think I'm crazy.

I never did call the NDC, so how could she have a missed call from me?

I thought that maybe my dad called NDC and left a message for them to call me? but why should he do that when he wanted me to call NDC instead.
My dad's is hard of hearing due to the chemos so I do all his apppointments as he would not be able to hear very clear what the other party is saying in normal tone. I practically have to shout in order for my dad to hear me over the phone.

Anyway, I asked him if he did call NDC but he said no.

Now the NDC lady said it's missed call, not left a message - so the missed call number is my house number and that's how she called me at home.

Did my thinking hard about it, my subconscious mind made it happened?

or was it my parallel self in the parallel dimension who had already made the call and somehow at that moment, both of our dimension happened to overlap resulting in me receiving the phone call from NDC in my dimension when it should have been received in the parallel dimension?

My Augmented Reality Creation

Ha! I've found out how the Science Museum brings their 3D dinosaurs to life by just pointing your iphone on a dinosaur pic. Well, I'm pretty sure that this is how they did it.

To view my own augmented reality creation app, you have to go to the iTunes store(sorry, only for iphones) and download this app : Aurasma Lite (it's free).

After downloading it to your iphone, point your iphone's camera to the below dragon pic, centre it and see what happens.

HAPPY, HEALTHY, PROSPEROUS DRAGON YEAR EVERYONE!

Now to just figure out how to do a 3D augmented reality image *scratch head*

Control the Weather, Control the World

...... is the tagline of the mini-series "The Storm" now showing on Channel 5. It is about men shooting up beams from antennae to the Earth's atmosphere to control the weather. Disasters struck when they try to control Mother Nature.

amazing theory, great science fiction, how can you control mother nature?...

well, think again, it is already happening.................

(Below extracted from different authors)

Welcome to THE HAARP CONSPIRACY

What is HAARP?
High Frequency Active Auroral Research Programme (HAARP) is a project that aims to investigate "understanding, stimulate and control ionospheric processes that can alter the performance of communication and surveillance systems".

Where is HAARP?

The official HAARP facility is located in Gakuna, Alaska.

The site consists of a collection of antennae, arranged in a computer-controlled grid, known as a "phased array".

A phased array has the ability to focus radion signals in a precise direction, without the necessity ot furning the antennae.

Modern radar systems no longer use the revolving dish that we have come to recognize.
The new radar antennae, which rely on phased arrays, look more like the flat screen of a drive-in movie, speckled with small umbrella-like antennae in neat rows.

The phased array in HAARP is not a radar, but it uses some of the same extremely high frequencies to focus a powerful radion beam to specific locations in the Earth's ionosphere.

Who is using HAARP?
Project was undertaken jointly by the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy Force, and the University of Alaska.

The Function of HAARP?

The purpose of this program is for more advance in the study of physical and electrical properties of the earth that can be used in future military communications easier.

HAARP shoots large amounts of electro-magnetic energy up into the higher regions of earth's atmosphere (ionosphere) which then acts like a huge mirror and reflects the energy back down and deep into the earth's surface

The beams can be aimed to direct high amounts of energy to enter the earth or beneath the oceans. HAARP can be used like radar or sonar to find underground installations or to find minerals - like oil for instance - beneath the earth's surface.

But other than that, HAARP can also set the weather through the ionosphere, such as making rain, storms, tsunamis, and many are still unknown.

If the beam is focused long enough into an area where two or more of the earth's tectonic plates meet, the resulting vibrations can cause the plates to slip - thus an earthquake can occur.

The HAARP power transmission towers are designed to generate power in such a way that it is beamed up into the ionosphere in tremendous quantities.

It is made to beam more than 1.7gigawatts (billion watts) of radiated power into the ionosphere - the electrically charged layer above Earth's atmosphere. Put simply, the apparatus is a reversal of a radio telescope - just transmitting instead of receiving. It will 'boil the upper atmosphere'.

From this northern latitude, the energy could be aimed into the ionosphere so that it would bounce back down to the earth so it would come down wherever the scientists wanted it to come down. The secret was to learn how and where to aim it to hit the earth where they wanted it to hit, creating the type of disaster or weather they desired.

In a nutshell, this is the nucleus of the expertise just recently acquired to control the weather. By pouring measured energy that has been focused into certain parts of the ionosphere, scientists can create all kinds of weather like hurricanes, thunderstorms, floods, tornadoes and drought and even earthquakes.

Keep that thought in mind as we examine still more aspects of this HAARP technology that is pouring such enormous quantities of energy into our upper atmosphere. Researches quickly found that this technology could be used in ways other than just to control the weather. They discovered they had stumbled upon a weapon which could be used most effectively, to destroy, destroy, and destroy some more, with the vast majority of the people of the world completely unaware of what was happening to them. After all, most people today still believe that the control of the basic weather of this planet is out of the control of mankind.

The greatest concern is that scientists and the military are so very arrogant in their ignorant, reckless use of focused energy into the ionosphere. What if they set off an inintended reaction in the atmosphere that cannot be controlled or stopped?

In conclusion, if HAARP is used for good purposes, there would be no real problem. But testing HAARP cause climate change and the earth element becomes unstable, which will also accelerate the process of global warming.

(Note: Many articles have been written about HAARP. But some believes HAARP is not the actual facility designed to be used as a military system but a "front" or "red herring" facility which allows the authorities to deny important questions about its purpose and operations. Some believes that the real facility is located in Poker Flats, North of Fairbanks, Alaska.)

******************************************************************

Is this why we are seeing unusual weather phenomenas???

FRIENDS

A friend from UK sent me an email of the below. It said to send it to every friend - I will post it here and everybody, friends or strangers can read and reflect on it.

Thank you LC.

People come into your life for a Reason,
a Season or a Lifetime.

When you know which one it is,
you will know what to do for that person...

When someone is in your life for a REASON,
it is usually to meet a need you have expressed.

They have come to assist you through a difficulty,
to provide you with guidance and support,

To aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually.

They may seem like a godsend and they are.

They are there for the reason you need them to be.

Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at
an inconvenient time, this person will say or do
something to bring the relationship to an end.

Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away.

Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand.

What we must realize is that our need has been met,
our desire fulfilled, their work is done.

The prayer you sent up has been answered and
now it is time to move on.

Some people come into your life for a SEASON,
because your turn has come to share, grow or learn.

They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh.

They may teach you something you have never done.

They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy.

Believe it, it is real. But only for a season.

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons,
things you must build upon in order to have a

solid emotional foundation.

Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person
and put what you have learned to use in all other
relationships and areas of your life.

It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.

Thank you for being a part of my life,
whether you were a reason, a season or a lifetime.

Angels exist, only sometimes they haven't got
wings and we call them friends.

"OM" is the word

Eugene will be having his baptism soon.

Daddy and son will be Catholic and mommy is Buddhist.

But if Eugene, when he's all grown up and wants to embrace another faith, we will not object.

Lately, I've been doing meditation with Eugene. No lah, not the deep kind of meditation. I will hold Eugene's hand and go "ooommmm" 3 times only, short and sweet and that boy actually sat with me and with his hand in mine, goes "mmmmmm" (he does not know how to do the "O" sound) together with me.

And...... he likes to clank on my Tibetan singing bowl.

Heaven or Hell ?

I hope I'm not opening a can of worms by saying this :

All religions are good and teaches you the right path to take. It's good to have a strong believe in your own faith and believe in what your own faith teaches.

But don't push your own faith onto another. Don't expound to others that your own religion/god is the only true one and the only path to salvation (you mean, another different religion are fake, their god is fake, everybody will burn in hell?).

Hmm.... a thought. If everybody thinks that their own religion is the only true one and non-followers will be doomed - doesn't this mean that everybody on Earth is doomed?
AA followers say BB followers will go to hell, while BB followers say AA followers will go to hell - man, this is ridiculous and funny.

Come on everybody, believe in your own faith but don't condemn or mock others of different faith.

I saw the below article and thought that it's well put. Article mentioned about Buddhism but I am not spreading about Buddhism here. It just so happen that Buddhism was mentioned - it could refer to any other religion.

Can You Believe What I Believe, If You Believe You Love Me?

A friend, who is a newbie to Buddhism, lamented that his fiancee is pressurising him to convert to her faith, or they had better not get married. She had realised he was becoming more and more engaged in Buddhism, and got “worried”.

Isn’t this sad? Just as she saw her faith important to her, she could not see how his mattered to him. What’s more confounding is her closed-mindedness to Buddhism, while insisting her faith is the only right one. How could she force him to convert, while totally disrespecting his faith?

When one uses one’s love as stakes to threaten, is it really love? True love is unconditional – it accepts people as they are, not as who we want them to be.

The key to “religious tolerance” is understanding. “Tolerance” is not the most appropriate word. With true understanding, there is no need to “tolerate” – we make peace with each other, live and let live. Shouldn’t this practice of “religious tolerance” begin with those we are closest to, since we love them the most?

One’s faith is often one’s most precious “possession”. So precious is it that one would naturally wish to share it – especially with loved ones. Remembering how this applies not only to ourselves, but to those we love too, there is no point force-feeding our faiths to each another. We can imagine the exasperation in being unable to lead loved ones to “salvation”, but we have to remember that as much as want to “save”, others might not want to be “saved” in our way. In fact, their idea of “salvation” might be entirely different.

If we truly love the ones we do, we should keep our minds open, and take the time to understand why they embrace their faiths so strongly.

The incident made me reflect… Will I give up Buddhism to make way for love? If I am a newbie lacking in understanding the importance of taking and keeping refuge in the Triple Gem (the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha), I might relinquish Buddhism. Not being a newbie anymore, I will choose my spiritual relationship with the Triple Gem above any worldly relationship. It’s as crystal clear as why we should choose the discovered path to Nirvana instead of taking a detour. Then again, can I be compassionate enough to pretend to forgo my faith, while using skilful means to win my partner to Buddhism in good time? Devious? Well, it depends on your motivation – is it solely out of true love to benefit, or just to win another convert?

An ideal relationship nurtures spiritual growth. If not, it might nurture “samsaric” growth instead. Maintaining a harmonious love relationship with someone of another faith, though tricky, is possible.

Sadly, some inter-religious marriages work well when one or both parties are not staunch spiritual practitioners. Sometimes, one party is so dominating that the other always gives in, suffering in silence. Thus are the chances of friction due to differences low in these two instances.

Probably the biggest test of “religious tolerance” is when a couple has kids. Will each try their best to win the kids to their “side”? Will the kids experience religious harmony or conflict at home?

Just as it is best for the kids to experience harmony, it is best that the adults start nurturing the harmony between themselves now – whether they plan for children or not.

Harmony will ensue when we focus on the common virtues which make religions respectable; not their differences.

On hindsight, it might be a blessing in disguise that my friend faced his dilemma early – before marriage. After all, before considering nuptial commitment, it’s always good to consider possible problems of religious commitment.

May they and all other inter-religious couples be well and happy!

We Are Energy Beings

Another confirmation that we are all 'energy'.

We are of the Universe, it's our logical left brain that is telling us that we are a separate entity.

How to shut out the left brain? I believe meditation can achieve that. Meditation is able to shut out the outside world, and you will be more 'aware'.

Note : my own personal opinion

Don't Mix Up

Assess a religion on the basis of its teachings.

The deeds of its followers are a different matter;
whether good or bad,
they belong to individuals and not the teachings.

Don't mix up the two.

Fengshui

I do believe in fengshui to a certain extent.

If it is to do something or place something, change position etc and if it does not inconvenience anybody, then sure why not.

But if it is to the point where it is being ridiculous - obviously you might not think so, but if somebody tells you so - then rethink.

The below article is a good summary.

Main point - it's your Mind that will make the changes. Hmm, did Demartini from "The Secret" realised this too?

Newbie Buddhists often wonder if fengshui or geomancy has any connections with Buddhism.

Well, along with astrology and such, the Buddha did see such practices as low arts, since they do not lead to enlightenment, while he did not outright say they are totally invalid or useless.

Well, there is some connection between the elements and our lives, since our lives are interconnected with our environment. However, when these connections are spelled out as mystical rules to be followed blindly without reflection or enquiry, it becomes a pseudo-religion of superstition instead.

Let's look at very basic 'geomancy' to see how it can make sense.

If you open an eatery next to a stinking public toilet, it's obvious that the stench will mask any tempting aromas from your shop.
This would clearly be a case of 'bad fengshui', as we can tell with common sense!
If a so-called fengshui master, instead of proposing moving or doing something with the stench, proposes some other bizarre remedy instead, that even he can't explain the rationale of, would you follow his advice?
At what point is advice sensible and what point nonsensical? You decide!

There are logical concepts of geomancy which subtly marry geology and psychology, but there are many aspects accepted dogmatically too.

Why not actively enquire on their rationale before accepting them? If not, you might be taken for a ride that parts you with your money.

Buddhism advocates changing of the mind before changing the environment. When the mind changes, the environment can too - even if it is just your perception of it.

It is due to having sufficient good karma that a place with good fengshui can be found. Even so, its goodness can be destroyed by creation of bad karma! - Shen Shi'an

As your mind is your immediate environment, when your mind changes, the world changes. - Stonepeace

We're Already In The Matrix

When I read about Microsoft's Project Natal, their hands-free gaming, one thing came immediately to mind - it has already started - we are going into the Matrix.

Reproduced below is an article by Kevin Warwick.

THE MATRIX - OUR FUTURE?

"Is The Matrix merely a science fiction scenario, or is it, rather, a philosophical exercise? Alternatively, is it a realistic possible future world? The number of respected scientists predicting the advent of intelligent machines is growing exponentially. Steven Hawking, perhaps the most highly regarded theoretical scientist in the world and the holder of the Cambridge University chair that once belonged to Isaac Newton, said recently, "In contrast with our intellect, computers double their performance every 18 months. So the danger is real that they could develop intelligence and take over the world." He added, "We must develop as quickly as possible technologies that make possible a direct connection between brain and computer, so that artificial brains contribute to human intelligence rather than opposing it."1 The important message to take from this is that the danger—that we will see machines with an intellect that outperforms that of humans—is real.

I. The Facts

But is it just a danger—a potential threat—or, if things continue to progress as they are doing, is it an inevitability? Is the Matrix going to happen whether we like it or not? One flaw in the present-day thinking of some philosophers lies in their assumption that the ultimate goal of research into Artificial Intelligence is to create a robot machine with intellectual capabilities approaching those of a human. This may be the aim in a limited number of cases, but the goal for most AI developers is to make use of the ways in which robots can outperform humans—rather than those in which they can only potentally become our match.

Robots can sense the world in ways that humans cannot—ultraviolet, X-ray, infrared, and ultrasonic perception are some obvious examples—and they can intellectually outperform humans in many aspects of memory and logical mathematical processing. And robots have no trouble thinking of the world around them in multiple dimensions, whereas human brains are still restricted to conceiving the same entity in an extremely limited three dimensional way. But perhaps the biggest advantage robots have over us is their means of communication—generally an electronic form, as opposed to the human’s embarrassingly slow mechanical technique called speech, with its highly restricted coding schemes called languages.

It appears to be inevitable that at some stage a sentient robot will appear, its production having been initiated by humans, and begin to produce other, even more capable and powerful robots. One thing overlooked by many is that humans do not reproduce, other than in cloning; rather, humans produce other humans. Robots are far superior at producing other robots and can spawn robots that are far more intelligent than themselves.

Once a race of intellectually superior robots has been set into action, major problems will appear for humans. The morals, ethics, and values of these robots will almost surely be drastically different from those of humans. How would humans be able to reason or bargain with such robots? Why indeed should such robots want to take any notice at all of the silly little noises humans would be making? It would be rather like humans today obeying the instructions of cows.

So a war of some kind would be inevitable, in the form of a last gasp from humans. Even having created intelligent, sentient robots in the first place, robots that can out-think them, the humans’ last hope would be to find a weak spot in the robot armoury, a chink in their life-support mechanism. Naturally, their food source would be an ideal target. For the machines, obtaining energy from the sun—a constant source—would let them bypass humans, excluding them from the loop. But as we know, humans have already had much success in polluting the atmosphere and wrecking the ozone layer, so blocking out the sun’s rays – scorching the sky, in effect – would seem to be a perfectly natural line of attack in an attempt to deprive machines of energy.

In my own book, In the Mind of the Machine2, I had put forth the idea that the machines would, perhaps in retaliation, use humans as slave labourers, to supply robots with their necessary energy. Indeed, we must consider this as one possible scenario. However, actually using humans as a source of energy—batteries, if you like—is a much sweeter solution, and more complete. Humans could be made to lie in individual pod-like wombs, acting rather like a collection of battery cells, to feed the machine-led world with power.

Probably in this world of machine dominance there would be a few renegade humans causing trouble, snapping at the heels of the machine authorities in an attempt to wrestle back power for humans, an attempt to go back to the good old times. So it is with the Matrix. It is a strange dichotomy of human existence that as a species we are driven by progress—it is central to our being—yet at the same time, for many there is a fruitless desire to step back into a world gone by, a dream world.

Yet it is in human dreams that the Matrix machines have brought about a happy balance. Simply treating humans as slaves would always bring about problems of resistance. But by providing a port directly into each human brain, each individual can be fed a reality with which he or she is happy, creating for each one a contented existence in a sort of dream world. Even now we know that scientifically it would be quite possible to measure, in a variety of ways, the level of contentment experienced by each person. The only technical problem is how one would go about feeding a storyline directly into a brain.

So what about the practical realities of the brain port? I myself have, as reported in ‘I, Cyborg,’3 had a 100-pin port that allowed for both signal input and output connected into my central nervous system. In one experiment conducted while I was in New York City, signals from my brain, transmitted via the Internet, operated a robot hand in the UK. Meanwhile, signals transmitted onto my nervous system were clearly recognisable in my brain. A brain port, along the lines of that in the Matrix, is not only a scientific best guess for the future; I am working on such a port now, and it will be with us within a decade at most.

II. Human or Machine

With the port connected into my nervous system, my brain was directly connected to a computer and thence on to the network. I considered myself to be a Cyborg: part human, part machine. In The Matrix, the story revolves around the battle between humans and intelligent robots. Yet Neo, and most of the other humans, each have their own brain port. When out of the Matrix, they are undoubtedly human; but while they are in the Matrix, there can be no question that they are no longer human, but rather are Cyborgs. The real battle then becomes not one of humans versus intelligent robots but of Cyborgs versus intelligent robots.

The status of an individual whilst within the Matrix raises several key issues. For example, when they are connected are Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity individuals within the Matrix? Or do they have brains which are part human, part machine? Are they themselves effectively a node on the Matrix, sharing common brain elements with others? It must be remembered that ordinarily human brains operate in a stand-alone mode, whereas computer-brained robots are invariably networked. When connected into a network, as in the Matrix, and as in my own case as a Cyborg, individuality takes on a different form. There is a unique, usually human element, and then a common, networked machine element.

Using the common element, ‘reality’ can be downloaded into each brain. Morpheus describes this (as do others throughout the film) as ‘having a dream.’ He raises questions as to what is real. He asks how it is possible to know the difference between the dream world and the real world. This line of questioning follows on from many philosophical discussions, perhaps the most prominent being that of Descartes, who appeared to want to make distinctions between dream states and ‘reality’, immediately leading to problems in defining what was real and what was not. As a result he faced further problems in defining absolute truths.

Perhaps a more pertinent approach can be drawn from Berkeley, who denied the existence of a physical world, and Nietzsche, who scorned the idea of objective truth. By making the basic assumption that there is no God, my own conclusion is that there can be no absolute reality, there can be no absolute truth — whether we be human, Cyborg, or robot. Each individual brain draws its conclusions and makes assumptions as to the reality it faces at an instant, dependant on the input it receives. If only limited sensory input is forthcoming, then brain memory banks (or injected feelings) need to be tapped for a brain to conceive of a storyline. At any instant, a brain links its state with its common-sense memory banks, often coming to unlikely conclusions.

As a brain ages, or as a result of an accident, the brain’s workings can change; this often appears to the individual to be a change in what is perceived rather than a change in that which is perceiving. In other words, the individual thinks it must be the world that has changed, not his or her brain. Where a brain is part of a network, however, there is a possibility for alternative viewpoints to be proposed by different nodes on the network. This is not something that individual humans are used to. An individual brain tends to draw only one conclusion at a time. In some types of schizophrenia this conclusion can be confused and can change over time; it is more usually the case, though, that such an individual will draw a conclusion about what is perceived that is very much at variance with the conclusion of other individuals. For the most part, what is deemed by society to be ‘reality’ at any point, far from being an absolute, is merely a commonly agreed set of values based on the perceptions of a group of individuals.

The temptation to see a religious undertone in The Matrix is interesting — with Morpheus cast as the prophet John the Baptist, Trinity perhaps as God or the holy spirit, Neo clearly as the messiah, and Cypher as Judas Iscariot, the traitor. But, far from a Gandhi-like, turn the other cheek, approach, Neo’s is closer to one that perhaps was actually expected by many of the messiah himself, taking on his role as victor over the evil Matrix: a holy war against a seemingly invincible, all-powerful machine network.

But what of the machine network, the Matrix, itself? With an intellect well above that of collective humanity, surely its creativity, its artistic sense, its value for aesthetics would be a treat to behold. But the film keeps this aspect from us – perhaps to be revealed in a sequel. Humans released from the Matrix grip, merely regard it as an evil, perhaps Cypher excluded here. Meanwhile the Agents are seen almost as faceless automatons, ruthless killers, strictly obeying the will of their Matrix overlord. Possibly humans would see both the Matrix and Agents as the enemy, just as the Matrix and Agents would so regard humans – but once inside the Matrix the picture is not so clear. As a Cyborg, who are your friends and who are your enemies? It is no longer black and white when you are part machine, part human.

III. In and Out of Control

Morpheus tells Neo that the Matrix is control. This in itself is an important revelation. As humans, we are used to one powerful individual being the main instigator, the brains behind everything. It is almost as though we cannot even conceive of a group or collection running amuck, but believe, rather, that there is an individual behind it all. In the second world war, it was not the Germans or Germany who the allies were fighting but Adolf Hitler; meanwhile in Afghanistan, it is Bin-Laden who is behind it all. Yet in the Matrix we are faced with a much more realistic scenario, in that it is not some crazed individual up to no good, but the Matrix – a network.

When I find myself in a discussion of the possibility of intelligent machines taking over things, nine times out of ten I am told—following a little chuckle to signify that I have overlooked a blindingly obvious point—that "If a machine causes a problem you can always switch it off." What a fool I was not to have thought of it!! How could I have missed that little snippet?

Of course it is not only the Matrix but even today’s common Internet that gives us the answer, and cuts the chuckle short. Even now, how is it practically possible to switch off the Internet? We’re not talking theory here, we’re talking practice. Okay, it is of course possible to unplug one computer, or even a small subsection intranet, but to bring down the whole Internet? Of course we can’t. Too many entities, both humans and machines, rely on its operation for their everyday existence. It is not a Matrix of the future that we will not be able to switch off, it is a Matrix of today that we cannot switch off, over which we cannot have ultimate control.

Neo learns that the Matrix is a computer-generated dream world aimed at keeping humans under control. Humans are happy to act as an energy source for the Matrix as long as they themselves believe that the reality of their existence is to their liking; indeed, how are the human nodes in a position to know what is computer-generated reality and what is reality generated in some other way?

A stand-alone human brain operates electrochemically, powered partly by electrical signals and partly by chemicals. In the western world we are more used to chemicals being used to change our brain and body state, either for medicinal purposes or through narcotics, including chemically instigated hallucinations. But now we are entering the world of e-medicine. Utilising the electronic element of the electrochemical signals on which the human brain and nervous system operate, counterbalancing signals can be sent to key nerve fibre groups to overcome a medical problem. Conversely, electronics signals can be injected to stimulate movement or pleasure. Ultimately, electronic signals will be able to replace the chemicals that release memories and "download" memories not previously held. Why live in a world that is not to your liking if a Matrix state is able to keep your bodily functions operating whilst you live out a life in a world in which you are happy with yourself? The world of the Matrix would appear to be one that lies in the direction humanity is now heading—a direction in which it would seem, as we defer more and more to machines to make up our minds for us, that we wish to head.

IV. Ignorance and Bliss

In a sense, The Matrix is nothing more than a modern day "Big Brother," taking on a machine form rather than the Orwellian vision of a powerful individual using machines to assist and bring about an all-powerful status. But 1984, the novel in which the story of Big Brother was presented, was published in 1948. The Matrix comes fifty years later. In the meantime, we have witnessed the likes of radar, television for all, space travel, computers, mobile phones, and the Internet. What would Orwell’s Big Brother have been like if he had had those technologies at his disposal – would Big Brother have been far from the Matrix? With the first implant I received, in 1998, for which I had no medical reason (merely scientific curiosity), a computer network was able to monitor my movements. It knew what time I entered a room and when I left. In return it opened doors for me, switched on lights, and even gave me a welcoming "Hello" as I arrived. I experienced no negatives at all. In fact, I felt very positive about the whole thing. I gained something as a result of being monitored and tracked. I was happy with having Big Brother watching me because, although I gave up some of my individual humanity, I benefited from the system doing things for me. Would the same not be true of the Matrix? Why would anyone want to experience the relatively tough and dangerous life of being an individual human when he or she could be part of the Matrix? So here we come on to the case of Cypher. As he eats his steak he says, "I know that this steak doesn’t exist. I know when I put it in my mouth, the Matrix is telling my brain that it is juicy and delicious!" He goes on to conclude that "Ignorance is bliss." But is it ignorance? His brain is telling him, by whatever means, that he is eating a nice juicy steak. How many times do we nowadays enter a fast-food burger bar in order to partake of a burger that, through advertising, our brains have been conditioned into believing is the tastiest burger imaginable. When we enter we know, because we’ve seen the scientific papers, that the burger contains a high percentage of water, is mainly fat, and is devoid of vitamins. Yet we still buy such burgers by the billion. When we eat one, our conditioned brain is somehow telling us that it is juicy and delicious, yet we know it doesn’t quite exist in the form our brain is imagining. We can thus understand Cypher’s choice. Why be out of the Matrix, living the dangerous, poor, tired, starving life of a disenfranchised human, when you can exist in a blissfully happy life, with all the nourishment you need? Due to the deal he made with Agent Smith, once Cypher is back inside he will have no knowledge of having made any deal in the first place. He appears to have nothing at all to lose. The only negative aspect is that before he is reinserted he may experience some inner moral human pangs of good or bad. Remember that being reinserted is actually good for the Matrix, although it is not so good for the renegade humans who are fighting the system. Robert Nozick’s thought experiment puts us all to the test, and serves as an immediate exhibition of Cypher’s dilemma. Nozick asks, if our brains can be connected, by electrodes, to a machine which gives us any experiences we desire, would we plug into it for life? The question is, what else could matter other than how we feel our lives are going, from the inside? Nozick himself argued that other things do matter to us, for example that we value being a certain type of person, we want to be decent, we actually wish to do certain things rather than just have the experience of doing them. I disagree completely with Nozick. Research involving a variety of creatures, principally chimpanzees and rats, has allowed them to directly stimulate pleasure zones in their own brain, simply by pressing a button. When given the choice of pushing a button for pleasure or a button for food, it is the pleasure button that has been pressed over and over again, even leading to starvation (although individuals were quite happy even about that). Importantly, the individual creatures still had a role to play, albeit merely that of pressing a button. This ties in directly with the Matrix, which also allows for each individual mentally experiencing a world in which he or she is active and has a role to play. It is, however, an important question whether or not an individual, as part of the Matrix, experiences free will or not. It could be said that Cypher, in deciding to re-enter the Matrix, is exercising his free will. But once inside, will he still be able to exhibit free will then? Isn’t it essentially a similar situation to that proposed by Nozick? Certainly, within the mental reality projected on an individual by the Matrix, it is assumed that a certain amount of mental free will is allowed for; but it must be remembered, at the same time, that each individual is lying in a pod with all his or her life-sustaining mechanisms taken care of and an interactive storyline being played down into his or her brain. Is that free will? What is free will anyway, when the state of a human brain is merely partly due to a genetic program and partly due to life’s experience? Indeed, exactly the same thing is true for a robot. In the Matrix, no human fuel cells are killed, not even the unborn—there is no abortion. Yet, naturally dying humans are allowed to die naturally and are used as food for the living. Importantly, they are not kept alive by chemicals merely for the sake of keeping them alive. The Matrix would appear to be more morally responsible to its human subjects than are human subjects to themselves. Who therefore wouldn’t want to support and belong to the Matrix, especially when it is making life easier for its subjects? Neo is kidnapped by Luddites, dinosaurs from the past when humans ruled the earth. It’s not the future. We are in reality heading towards a world run by machines with an intelligence far superior to that of an individual human. But by linking into the network and becoming a Cyborg, life can appear to be even better than it is now. We really need to clamp down on the party-pooper Neos of this world and get into the future as soon as we can—a future in which we can be part of a Matrix system, which is morally far superior to our Neolithic morals of today."

Actually, we are ALREADY IN THE MATRIX.

A Glimpse of Heaven

I came across a blog and have since always enjoyed her very insightful postings.

Here I reproduce one of her posting :

" I would urge all my readers to try to be at peace with themselves.
Do not let unkind remarks affect your joy or confidence, for always remember that people's condemnation and unfair judgement of you do not send you to hell; neither do their praises skyrocket you to heaven!!
Hence, before we detect the speck in others' eyes, let us remove the grime and dirt from our own eyes.

A GLIMPSE OF HEAVEN

I was shocked, confused, bewildered

As I entered Heaven's door,

Not by the beauty of it all,

Nor the lights or its decor.

But it was the folks in Heaven

Who made me sputter and gasp ---

The thieves, the liars, the sinners,

The alcoholics and the trash.

There stood the kid from 7th grade

Who swiped my lunch money twice.

Next to him was my old neighbor

Who never said anything nice.

Herb, who I always thought

Was rotting away in hell,

Was sitting pretty on cloud nine,

Looking incredibly well.

I nudged Jesus, 'What's the deal?

I would love to hear Your Take

How'd all these sinners get up here?

God must've made a mistake.

'And why's everyone so quiet,

So somber - give me a clue.'

'Hush, child,' He said, 'they're all in shock.

No one thought they'd be seeing you.'

JUDGE NOT.

Remember...Just going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in your garage makes you a mechanic.

Every saint has a PAST...

Every sinner has a FUTURE "

“Just so, I tell you,
there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents
than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.”

- Jesus to the Pharisees “The Lost Sheep” (Luke 15:7)

Dissolving Anger

Taking care of baby Eugene can be very stressful sometimes especially when he 'acts' up - being naughty refusing to eat his food or spitting out his food into your face.

A couple of times I lost my cool and scolded him and also smack his leg - and always felt so guilty later.

I'm glad that I had taken meditation classes before as it helps me to bring me back to being more aware of situations and not be sucked into it and also to quickly centre myself so that I can get to being more calm quickly.

And so now, if Eugene gets to be very 'trying' - I will breathe calmly and meditate and ask his and my angels for help.

Here's a very good passage from a Buddhist article :

How Mindfulness Of Breathing Can Dissolve Anger

The Buddha taught that the fire of anger can burn up everything we have done to bring happiness to ourselves and others. There is not one of us who has not sown seeds of anger in one's heart, and if those seeds are watered, they will grow rapidly and choke us and those around us.

When we are angry, we should come back to ourselves by means of our conscious breathing. We should not look at or listen to the one we feel is making us angry and causing us to suffer.

The other person may have said or done something unskilful or unmindful. But his unskilful words or actions arise from his own suffering. He may just be seeking some relief, hoping to survive. The excessive suffering of one person will often overflow to others. A person who is suffering needs our help, not our anger. We come to see this when we examine our anger through our breathing.

The Buddha says that anger makes us look ugly. If we are able to breathe [mindfully] when we are angry and recognise the ugliness anger brings with it, that recognition acts as a bell of mindfulness. We breathe and smile mindfully in order to bring some evenness back into our hearts, at the same time relaxing the nervous system and the tense muscles of the face. We must keep on with our conscious breathing as we practise walking meditation in the open air, looking deeply at what has happened.

Mindfulness and conscious breathing are sources of energy and can calm the storm of anger, which itself is also a source of energy. If we keep practising mindfulness in order to take care of our anger with the affection of a mother when she takes a small child in her arms, then not only shall we calm the storm but we shall also be able to find out where our anger really comes from.

Our practice, carefully executed, will thus be able to transform the seeds of anger in us.

Parallel Dimensions

I was channel surfing TV (as usual) and came across this documentary on other dimensions which led me to read more about it from the internet.

The below paragraph was taken from the net :

"When we talk about parallel dimensions we are not speaking of an exact duplicate, but of near duplicate dimensions. For example, I have brown hair in this dimension so in other parallel dimensions my hair might be tan, black, blond. If I am right handed here, other dimensions I may be left handed. Near duplicate, but not exactly the same.

Scientists have now confirmed the existence of at least eleven other dimensions. We have taught that the spirits of the dead exist within their own dimension that is the nearest to ours. Accounts of spirits or ghosts walking through walls instead of the doorway perhaps is because in their dimension, the wall is a hallway or doorway, but in our dimension it is a wall. Spirits tend to create the reality they live within which often overlaps into our dimension."

You might think that this is all hogwash but there is some element of truth in it as someone close and I, had experienced it.

There were 2 incidents that I had experienced that I can still remember so clearly to this day like it had just happened yesterday :

(1) When I was, I think, about 6-7 years old. My parents brought me to the Farrer Park swimming pool. I do not know how to swim and this young girl put me on her shoulder and started wading into the pool.

She fell and the next thing I knew, I was under the water. Now it was very crowded that day, but when I went under, it was all blue and empty - nobody, the whole pool was empty! - I couldn't see anybody's body, legs, arms under the water - it's like another place. A voice (I now know it's my guardian angel/angels) told me not to be scared but to just hold my breath.

So there I was under the water and I remember that it was so peaceful and quiet. Then suddenly, a light burst above me and I saw this non-chinese man with moustache and a hairy chest swimmed towards me and carried me up to the surface.

When I came up to the surface, I can hear my mom being kind of hysterical, shouting if I'm ok and whether I was coughing or choking...... oh, I thought to myself, I'm expected to cough har..... so, I pretended to cough - actually I was fine. I remembered later being given a curry puff to eat.

2) My mom just had an operation and she was hospitalised at the Toa Payoh hospital. I was around maybe 11-12 years old.

So every afternoon, I will walk from home to the hospital to visit my mom. And being young and energetic, I do not talk the elevator but take the stairs.

One day, after visiting my mom, as usual I walk down the stairs. Usually, when i go down two rounds of the stairs, I should be on the ground floor. But on that day, I kept going round and down and down and down......... there's no sight of the ground floor. And on the landing of the commom corridors that leads to the wards, it was EMPTY - now, this is during lunch time and there should be plenty of people walking around. There were nobody, the whole corridor was empty.......

The thought that came to me was "oh no, not again. ok, if I can't go down, then I should go up."

I went up and up until I came upon the common corridor and there were people milling and walking - ok, I should be back to the present - so I ran along this corridor and went down the stairs at the other end of the corridor making sure that there are other people going down the stairs too.

On both encounters, it was devoid of people.

Now, for the real proof that there are other dimensions.

Someone young and close to me have a special gift. Let's call him, DD.

DD have a special gift where he can see the ghosts/spirits. And after talking to him, I realise that sometimes he sees the parallel dimension.

Let me explain.

Once I was at my parent's home :
Me : ok, do you see any 'special person'?
DD : ya
Me : what lah
DD : I see you...
Me : ????? har?? what do you mean
DD: I see 2 of you....
Me : (my hair already standing on ends) you see 2 of me ? then how you know which one is the real me?
DD : the other one looks like you, not an exact replica of you. She is not wearing any spectacles.
Me : what is she doing now?
DD : just walking around the house and sometimes making funny faces like what you do sometimes.
Me : do you see any other family members?
DD : the other day, GP(a family member) was out in the hall talking but I see the 'other GP' sleeping in the room.

So, I think this really proves that there is a parallel dimension out there.

Mindless Followers

Came across the below article - which I totally agree.

Try not to follow blindly or for the sake of doing it or just becos everyone's doing it or becos of peer pressure

Anything you repeat mindlessly is a pointless rite and ritual. - Stonepeace

Once upon a time, whenever the monks in a monastery were about to begin their evening meditation sessions, a stray cat would prance around and create quite a din, making it difficult to meditate.

With no workable solution then, the master asked the cat to be tied to a pole some distance away. Years later, after the master passed away, the same cat was still regularly tied, even though he had stopped making a nuisance of himself. Even more years later, when that cat died, another cat was brought in - to be tied up during meditation.

Absurdly, the master's disciples began writing lengthy scholarly pieces on the significance of the cat ritual! This is probably a good theory of how something done for a good reason can eventually degenerate into pointless superstition when its rationale is forgotten. Worse still, 'rationale' that is not the original might be wrongly imagined.

It's not suprising to come across many following customs without knowing their real intentions. This becomes ritualised display of blind ignorance - that might repeatedly create negative karma - e.g. by animal abuse!

Many religious rituals started simple - to serve practical functions, but became lavish in form over time, which distracts the followers from their true meaning. Some routines might not even be spiritual in nature!

As such, truly responsible disciples should question traditions instead of just adhering to them 'responsibly' - or there would be no wisdom gained.

Attachment to rites and rituals happens to be one of the first fetters to break on the path to enlightenment. Rituals are but means to a greater goal. Don't just stick to them and stay stuck!
