How to make "weapons" with everyday stuff.

My thoughts is : kind of expensive (about $35) for teaching simple stuff.

Some of the stuff they taught is how to make 'exploding' bombs, that is to put together ice-cream sticks and smash against the wall.

Another 'weapon' is to put q-tips in straws and blow them like a blow-pipe.

Ok, there's one which was quite good - 'cross-bow' but I suspect the teacher helped the kids a lot as it looked rather complicated.

As I said, just feel that it's not worth the money paid.

First Dental

He did so well, being not scared and sat still and opening his mouth when asked though I'm sure he was nervous.

First Speech & Drama Camp @ Toa Payoh CC

A very reasonably priced speech & drama camp at our local CC.

Theme was : Australia

Sitting next to Alyssa who's also his classmate in kindergarten.

The kids had only 4 hours of practice for the song skit - so, very good effort on their part.

I couldn't help laughing seeing my boy doing his dancing as it was so cute.

Sorry, the video's rather shaky as some parents were moving here and there and I have to step aside.



Eugene had a speaking part. He's the one wearing a hat.

He was Uncle Rod and his speech was : 'Hurry Up Kids! We have to leave now if you want to go to the zoo"


He was very shy lah.

What's Inside A Phone ?

One of our land line phone went kaput. We called in the SingTel technician and he said that it was most probably 'fried' when there was a thunderstorm.

The technician said that most phones nowadays does not have a safety feature installed. I asked him which phone is the most lasting and he said to get a Panasonic. Apparently Panasonic have a safety feature where if sense a surge, it will auto shut off and also from what he has seen, Panasonic lasts way longer than any other brands.


So we gave our spoilt phone to Eugene to 'dissect'. He was curious what's inside and how it looks like.

Gave him a screw driver..........

Oh, there's a magnet in the phone !

He really dismantled it and took out everything !

The kid helping Daddy on some painting.. I must say he's getting pretty good at it.

Well, it's more like something for him to do during this school holiday.

Numbers

The kid likes maths. Yep, you heard right, maths.

Teacher has been teaching the class addition and subtraction and he's been asking questions about multiplication, factions and 'minus' like what is 2-3 instead of 3-2 (and he can give you the correct answers to 'minus' sums).

Whoa, hold on there boy. Let's really get the basic right first before going into harder territory.

He has also been requesting to go for maths class after he saw this new centre teaching mathematics through using physical stuff to explain, very much like the Montessori way.


Ok, so we brought him to look see and the teacher there gave him an assessment too - got almost all correct except one which was due to carelessness.

We will most probably sign him up for it as we don't like the route way of learning that other places are coaching. And also, they have theory maths - I don't know what you call it but it's those maths where it's like a story and you're suppose to figure it out, understand that this is how the primary maths is like now.

Ok, my math's really bad, as in really bad and I don't like to think numbers and the kid's been giving me headache by testing my maths - yes, he's giving me the maths problem instead of me asking him, Hubby is good in maths and I will tell the kid to test daddy instead, ha ha.


So as I said, we'll most probably sign him up for the maths class as he has an interest in it.




I bought this how to tell time book quite a while back, thinking to let him try much later but he found it and very diligently completed the whole booklet by himself without any prompting. Those he don't know, he asked hubby to help explain.
I guess he liked doing it as time is numbers.

My First Bicycle

One of Eugene's classmate's mom (somehow we both happen to get along very well) passed her son's bike to Eugene.

We actually wanted to take out the pedals (like those Strider balance bikes) but it was too much of a hassle. So, instead, hubby brought it to the bike shop and have training wheels installed.

We'll get him to get the hang of riding a bicycle first and be more confident before we slowly rise up the training wheels.

Thanks J for the bicycle. 

It was the perfect size for him.

Swimming 3 - Underwater

The kid is quite ok now with going underwater, so long as he has something solid to hold on to, like the side of the pool or us - duh.....

Swimming 2 - Breathing Out

Today's lesson was how to breathe out underwater.

After his lesson, the kid came to us and proudly told us that he'll teach us how to breathe out thru the mouth underwater.

So we went, oh yes, please teach us, how do you do it?

Daddy said, let's go underwater and open and close our fingers.


You'll notice that the kid have one hand on the edge of the pool. He's still a bit scared to be underwater for a longer time and have his hand there to haul himself out of the water fast.

Swimming 1 - First swimming lesson

Eugene had taken swimming lessons before but after 3 months of lessons, he still did not get over his fear of water and just didn't like going for lessons.

I attribute this to the swimming coach.

Firstly, the coach talked so soft that even I have a hard time trying to make out what he's saying.

Secondly, I feel that the coach did not make an attempt to bond with the kids. Yes, his technique of swimming is good but what's the point if the kids don't trust you or don't like you.

So we stopped his swimming.



When the SAFRA Toa Payoh opened and there is a swim school, I immediately signed Eugene up for it.

 On the 1st lesson, I can see that Eugene was a bit apprehensive.

The kids were sitting on the edge of the pool and the coach was carrying the kids individually into the water. No underwater or anything like that, just dipping the kids to let them get used to be in the water.

I saw Eugene took one leg out of the water, then 2 legs out and then slowly turning his body sideways (like he want to run away). When it came to his turn, he started crying! Oh dear ! The coach consoled him and did not dip him in the water but put him back sitting on the edge of the pool.

I didn't carry on to see the rest of the lesson so I don't know what happened next.

Oh oh dear. I was prepared that if he has to repeat his basic swimming lessons, so be it. I rather he do it in his own time and not to push him as it might have the opposite effect that he would just hate swimming.

After the lessons, we stayed on to just play in the pool. To my surprise, Eugene wanted to jump into the waters. He told me to 'catch' him(carry him out of the water). He kept jumping and jumping that I have to ask hubby to take over.

Then he said, mommy look at this. What did he do? He held onto the edge of the pool and dipped his head underwater! Wah! that's a first.

See now what happens after just his 2nd swimming lessons.



The children have to do warm-up followed by a quick shower before going to their respective swimming coaches.

 Eugene wasn't really doing the warming up exercises. He said the sun was too glary.

 Start of lesson and absolutely enjoying himself.

Here I come !

He jumped into the water before hubby grabbed him out of the water.

I am so happy and proud of the kid.

From a water-phobic kid to a water-loving kid in just two lessons is just absolutely awesome 'cos the kid was really scared of water - he's even scared of the water running down his face in the shower.

Again, I attribute this to the fantastic job that his current coach is doing.

Eugene said that he likes his present coach but not the previous one. And I think liking your coach and trusting him goes a long way in getting a kid to swim.

Looks like the kid will master his swimming way before me. Yes lah, I cannot swim! I almost drowned and that was it, really phobia.

But I am trying to now, slowly.... slowly ........ overcome my fear.

Sew Rabbit

Eugene got this handicraft in a goodie bag given to him by a birthday boy in class.

I showed him what he has to do and helped a little with the sewing.

A child-safe needle - actually a plastic needle with a knob at the end instead of a pointed sharp end.

There are perforated holes which you poke into.

Stick the googly eyes, whiskers, nose, dress and not forgetting to decorate the dress.

Wala! my completed little bunny.
